Practical advice

Tips for a perfect stay

fas fa-calendar-check

Book ahead

In July and August the park welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead for high season. In spring and autumn, 2–3 weeks is enough.
fas fa-sun

Arrive early

In high season, waterfalls and natural pools are crowded after 10 am. Arrive before 8:30 am to be sure of parking and quiet on the most popular trails.
fas fa-house-chimney

Explore beyond Caldas

Caldas do Gerês is the most popular gateway, but also the busiest. The Peneda, Soajo and Montalegre sectors offer equally spectacular scenery with far fewer visitors.
fas fa-hand-holding-heart

Support the local economy

Choose local rural houses, village restaurants and local producers. Responsible tourism supports the communities that have managed and protected this territory for centuries.
fas fa-moon

Stay at least 2 nights

The park is vast — 70,246 ha. A day trip only lets you see a small fraction. With 2–3 nights you can explore two or more sectors and experience the park in depth.
fas fa-mobile-screen-button

Get ready to switch off

The lack of signal in remote areas is part of the experience. Download maps, guides and trails offline before you go — disconnecting is part of what makes Gerês special.
